How WBTC WorksCustody & Security

Custody & Security

The core tenet of the WBTC network is institutional preservation. Underlying physical reserves are isolated using high-security infrastructure models designed to withstand complex attack vectors.

  • Diversified Cold Storage: 100% of underlying native Bitcoin reserves are kept in air-gapped cold storage environments protected by multi-signature (multi-sig) configurations.
  • Geographical Distribution: The key shares required to authorize vault actions are geographically distributed across different international regions. This removes single points of failure and eliminates regional or multi-jurisdictional systemic threats.
  • Bank-Grade Hardware: Vault security utilizes specialized, military-grade hardware security modules (HSMs) combined with multi-factor authentication policies to prevent unauthorized withdrawals or transfers.

Regulatory License and Global Compliance

WBTC operations are underpinned by partnerships with regulated, institutional custodians. The premier custodian framework for WBTC involves a compliance alliance between BiT Global and BitGo.

BitGo and BiT Global are licensed custodians, and leveraging on the security technology and infrastructure supported by BitGo, WBTC is reliable and assets are well protected.
